Frequently Asked Questions
Which type of play therapy is best for my child?
We understand that starting a new therapy can be confusing. The first step in any play therapy journey is getting to know your child and your family.
Your child's therapist will meet with you and find out more about your child's personal story, before tailoring a therapy program just for your child.
This may involve Humanistic, Learn to Play or Filial Therapy, or a combination of all three.
How long are the sessions and how often will my child attend?
Most play therapy sessions will include 45 minutes in the playroom. Depending on your child's developmental needs we may start with shorter 30 minute sessions to ensure they are able to fully engage and benefit most from the sessions.
Play Therapy works best when it is on a consistent schedule. We recommend regular weekly sessions, held the same day and time each week. This will assist your child to feel secure and anticipate their special play times, supporting them to build a positive association with the therapy.
How many sessions will my child need?
This will depend on the reason your child is coming to play therapy. As a guide some children attend for 10-12 sessions, while others with more complex needs may come for 24-26 sessions or longer. We will discuss your child's progress during parent consultations meetings and ensure we work with you to find the best time for your child to finish up.
Should I stay while my child is in a therapy session?
Yes! Although your child will be in the play room with the therapist, it is important that you are still near. If your child is feeling anxious or worried, they may like to check in with you to help them feel settled again.
The waiting area at Expressions has comfy seating, tea/coffee making facilities and a selection of books for you to enjoy. Make yourself at home and enjoy some downtime while your child is in the playroom with their therapist.
How will I know how my child is going?
Generally a parent consultation is set for every 5 weeks or so. This will be organised with your input and can be more or less often if preferred. These meetings can be done in person, via phone or video call.
During these meetings you will find out how your child is progressing in the therapy session, have the chance to ask any questions and share updates or concerns you have.
Due to the confidential nature of therapy your child's therapist is not able to share specific details of the sessions, rather they will share how your child is going and any changes seen.
What does Filial Therapy involve?
Unlike Humanistic and Learn to Play Therapy, Filial Therapy involves the whole family. The therapist will lead you through the process which involves teaching you, the parents, to run special playtimes with your children.
The therapy includes some sessions with the whole family, and others where only the parents are required for training. We will work with you to schedule these sessions around your childcare and work restrictions, making sure your family get the most from this therapy.
