Our Services

Expressions Play Therapy provides a range of play therapy services to support children and their families, tailoring each to the personal needs of the child.

Humanistic Play Therapy

Humanistic Play Therapy harnesses the child's natural instinct to play. Through the medium of play, a safe therapeutic environment is created which encourages relationship-builiding, expression, communication and problem resolution.

During a Humanistic Play Therapy session the child is able to choose what they want to do, as they take the lead in their sessions and follow their needs, desires and interests.  Children are free to express feelings, thoughts and concerns, taking charge of their own healing and working towards solving their own problems.  It can help them gain a better understanding of their own emotions and empowers them to discover the best strategies for them to manage big emotions.

Humanistic Play Therapy can be used to help children with a range of concerns, including trauma, anxiety, self esteem, social concerns and changes to their lives, such as moving house, or divorce.

Learn To Play

Based on the work of Karen Stagnitti, Learn to Play therapy is a play based therapy that helps develop the pretend play skills of children.

Through carefully planned play activites and one on one interactions their play skills are increased and this can lead to an increased level of enjoyment in their play.

Through Learn to Play a child can also increase their ability to initiate their own play, helping them to make connections with other children and increasing overall social skills.

Learn to Play can also help further develop a child’s language, fine motor and cognitive (or thinking) skills.

Filial Therapy

Loosely translated from the Latin word for son or daughter, Filial therapy is all about family.

It is a form of family therapy that aims to strengthen the connections between a parent and their child and empowers parents to support their children.

In Filial therapy parents develop a greater understanding of their children’s feelings and behaviours and learn how to respond with empathy and limit setting.

Filial therapy can help to reduce challenging behaviours in children by helping them to learn self regulation, increasing their self esteem and their acceptance of themselves.

Parents also report more confidence in their parenting as they increase their skills involving empathy, attentiveness and encouragement.

At Expressions Play Therapy we welcome all individuals regardless of their race, gender identity, family make up, ability or age. We hope to provide a welcoming environment where everyone feels safe and supported.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin nation as the traditional owners of the land on which we live, work and play. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.
